Today at the DAV was all about the sweaters.
Now, I have grown to avoid woolen things while thrifting. I have too often brought them home to find series of moth holes in them. Search as I might, I could never see them while in the store. So I grew weary of it. (Although I have saved the neatest of the bunch to give my hand at darning…) Today brought to me four wonderful sweaters, ranging from a quarter to two bucks. I searched, and I searched. Then, I searched some more. hands up the sleeves, wandering about the garment with my fingers… not one single moth hole. Perhaps they come from storing in the back through the summer months. Who can say.
I bought them all. All four.
I would prefer wool, but the right weight and feel in cotton will do well for me. A couple are a wool and nylon blend. Not sure where that came from, but they don’t pill, which is my biggest concern about synthetic fibers in sweaters.
This one above is a warm grey, almost a mustard in color. It gives a hint of military styling, so I brought back the fantastic military pants I found some time ago, that were featured previously in Sunday Style. (WARNING: Some of those images get a wee bit naughty.) Back also are the fourteen eye oxblood lace-ups.
I admit, I have lately become somewhat obsessed about v-necks, mostly since I am seeking alternatives to the vest as an additional layer. I have even *gasp* brought home a sweater vest! (I know. No, really, no intervention is needed…) This particular neckline rides up and acts much like a crew-neck. Perhaps I need to seek out sweaters with a buttoned placket to allow a better view of the tie and collar underneath.
The hat: I have never been sure what to think of myself in hats, other than the skullcap variety I use to keep warm in the winter. Plus I have a huge freakin’ fat head. I mean it. Size eight and a quarter. Honest, although I can cheat some with the styles that don’t wholly sit down onto the crown of the head. This one fits well enough, but it is out of season; it is too lightweight for the rest of this ensemble.
Of the dark colors, the two on top were brought home today. I like the raised knit patterns. The cream cable knit cotton sweater is fast becoming a favorite. Likewise, this one is as well, but it was on the drying rack during the photoshoot.
I think most sections of my wardrobe have reached a saturation point. I will still plan to visit the DAV on Sunday morning, but I have become more discriminating, looking for improved fit and fabrics. Also, I want to keep an eye out for the crazy stuff, like this faux fur collar and scarf. Beyond that, at least with my dress and casual button-downs, something must go for something else to come in. I have run out of closet space. I look for what has materials to be put elsewhere, like harvesting buttons or keeping articles with fabric that can be used elsewhere. I am keeping a pile for future frankensteining projects.
Beyond all that, all sections are hitting the saturation point: trousers, dress and casual button-downs, sport coats even sweaters and pullover shirts… And ties! I mean, when a great tie is a quarter, I snatch it up. Later, it may proof to be an off color for me, but still a damned great tie! The stuff that just doesn’t fit so right (color or size), I hold onto that for a bit for folks that come by for a visit. It is working out well so far. My studio-mate and recent visitors to my space have found the goods. the rest gets bagged up and donated back. It seems a waste on my part, but most of it was literally a quarter. So, meh.
