about my cap

Let me tell you the story about my cap…

Years ago, still living in Phoenix, I wanted a leather stocking cap, but I had already begun the ‘all-things-my-size’ attitude in my life. I stopped into Tuff Stuff and spoke with Bob. I am glad he agreed to trade for artwork, because what I wanted would be ridiculously expensive – for a hat.

They made for me the perfect ‘me’ cap, in the style of a stocking cap, made of black leather and about three foot in length from brim to tip. Originally, it was trimmed with white rabbit fur. Fantastic to touch and stroke… it got a lot of use through the years in Phoenix, considering how short the cold is there. I even tended bar in it. Shortly after it was made, I wired huge jingle bells down the side seam in the back. The noise was great and a perfect reflection of my personality at the holidays…

But rabbit fur is rabbit fur and as Jeffers at Tuff Stuff said, it starts falling about as soon as it is a finished pelt. It only lasted for the first five years of the hat. Honestly, it should have only lasted the first three or four.

Last year, I picked up a great piece of coyote fur from a hunter that vends at the local Renfest. Last year, I retrimmed the hat, much bushier than it was originally, but a wonderful evolution. And the bells went away. As fun as they were, I had to keep the tail of the hat over my shoulder or the weight would give me a headache in five minutes flat.

Last year, almost got a great photo of it at a party we attended. Sadly, too many folks were standing around us at the time and most of me and the hat were obscured…

Well, David was kind enough…. and I now have some great photos of myself and the cap.
